Custom Glass Shower with Glass Ceiling in Cumming, GA

A cabin-style vacation home in Cumming, Georgia, has a bathroom built around its ceiling: vaulted wood planks, exposed timbers, warm lighting. The homeowners wanted a shower to match the room, with one request that rules out the usual glass shower. They wanted a ceiling of its own. Apex Glass Industries replaced their existing shower with a fully enclosed frameless glass shower that includes overhead glass.

A Shower Designed Around the Way the Homeowners Live

The bathroom has a freestanding copper-toned bathtub, stone and tile finishes, rich wood throughout, and a spacious shower area under that soaring ceiling. The height is part of the room’s character. Inside the shower, the homeowners wanted the opposite: a more contained space, and one that felt warmer.

Their old shower was open at the top, which was the problem. A shower that’s open at the top shares its air with the whole room, and under a vaulted ceiling that’s a lot of air. Overhead glass is meant to keep the shower’s warm air closer to the person using it instead of letting it rise into the room. So they chose an enclosure with glass overhead. The glass ceiling was a decision about how they wanted to use the shower, not a decorative feature.

The Architectural Challenge of an Overhead Glass Enclosure

A standard frameless shower is vertical glass panels and a door. This one adds a horizontal panel overhead, and the shower isn’t a perfect square. That matters, because the overhead glass and the vertical panels had to be developed around the actual dimensions of this enclosure, not a standard rectangle.

Each piece of glass is made for its position and can’t be swapped with another. Several things have to work together:

  • Measurement of the finished space. The walls, vertical panels, door, and overhead glass all relate to one another, so they’re measured as built.

  • Angles and panel relationships. In a shower that isn’t square, every edge meets its neighbor at its own angle.

  • Overhead alignment. The horizontal glass has to correspond with the vertical enclosure, or the assembly won’t close.

  • Glass-to-glass joints. Where the overhead glass meets the vertical panels, fit and alignment matter most.

  • The door. Clearances, hardware placement, and alignment all affect how the enclosure closes.

  • Handling. Positioning glass overhead takes more care than setting a vertical panel.

The overhead glass was configured to follow the enclosure’s geometry, so the horizontal and vertical panels meet the way this enclosed design requires.

Why Accuracy Matters in Fully Enclosed Glass Showers

Tempered glass can’t be cut or trimmed after it’s tempered, so every panel has to be right before it arrives. In an enclosure with overhead glass, a small error in one measurement shows up at the joints.

Overhead glass alone doesn’t make a shower vapor-tight. How contained the space is depends on the whole enclosure: its joints, its door, and how the room is ventilated. The homeowners asked for the glass ceiling to follow the enclosure closely, so the shower would be as contained as the design allows. That was a design goal of the project, not a tested result.

The Experience Behind Specialized Architectural Glass

Projects like this are why experience matters. Apex takes on architectural glass that calls for more than a standard solution, from complex layouts to specialized glass configurations.

Apex handled this project from field measurement through drafting, fabrication, and installation with its own team. That meant understanding what the homeowners wanted, assessing the existing room, measuring the finished space, developing the layout, coordinating the panels, fabricating the glass, and aligning the finished enclosure. The people who measured the shower are the people who installed it.

A More Personal Way to Enjoy the Home

The room is large and the shower is small by comparison, and the glass is what makes the difference. Beneath the high ceiling, the enclosure creates a more intimate place to enjoy the warmth. Because the glass is clear, the wood ceiling and the room around it stay visible from inside.

A moment of warmth. A little time to yourself. That’s what the homeowners asked for, and it’s why they chose glass overhead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a frameless glass shower have a glass ceiling? Yes. Specialized enclosures can include overhead glass when the layout, support, hardware, and installation are planned for it. This Cumming shower has a glass ceiling fitted to the enclosure.

Why would someone choose a fully enclosed glass shower? For a more contained shower environment. These homeowners wanted a shower that felt warmer under a tall vaulted ceiling, and overhead glass is meant to keep the shower’s warm air closer instead of letting it rise into the room.

Does an overhead glass panel make a shower vapor-tight? No. Overhead glass alone doesn’t guarantee that. How well vapor is contained depends on the whole enclosure, including its joints, door, and ventilation.

Can overhead glass be fitted to a shower that isn’t perfectly square? Yes, with careful field measurement and glass fabricated for each position. In a shower that isn’t square, each panel meets its neighbors at its own angle.

Does Apex Glass Industries install specialized glass showers in Cumming, GA? Yes. Apex measures, drafts, fabricates, and installs frameless showers and other architectural glass in Cumming and throughout Georgia.
