Glass Railings Across Multiple Levels: A Buford, Georgia Project

4 min read

Apex Glass Industries completed a multi-level interior glass railing installation in a Buford, Georgia home, with glass extending from the main staircase to additional stair runs, upper landings, and second-floor overlooks. Apex Glass Industries designs, fabricates, and installs glass railings for stairs, balconies, overlooks, and exterior applications throughout Metro Atlanta and Georgia.

More Than One Staircase Railing

This wasn't a single run of glass beside one staircase. The railing follows the main staircase, continues through additional stair sections, carries across the landings, and extends out along the second-floor overlooks above. Glass moves through multiple levels of the home, from the main staircase to the upper landings and overlooks, as one connected system rather than a series of separate railing jobs that happen to share a house.

Why Multi-Level Glass Railings Require Coordination

A staircase railing and an overlook railing aren't the same geometry problem. Glass along a stair run follows the rake of the stairs, angled, with each panel relating to the step below it. Glass along a landing or an upper-level overlook sits level, running a straight horizontal line instead. A project that includes both can't treat them as unrelated sections measured and installed independently of each other.

With a railing this extensive, every section has to line up with the next as the glass moves from the stairs to the landings above. Where an angled stair run meets a level landing, the transition has to resolve cleanly, and where the railing turns a corner from one stair run into the next, the panels on either side of that corner have to relate to each other correctly. A glass contractor working on a project like this has to understand the complete railing layout before fabrication begins, not look at one panel at a time and assume it will meet the next section correctly on site.

Actual field conditions matter here more than they would on a single short run. A staircase and its surrounding landings rarely come out perfectly uniform in a real home, and a railing that has to follow the structure through several connected areas will show any inconsistency more noticeably than a shorter, isolated section would.

Before the Glass

The before photographs show the staircase as it stood prior to the railing installation, the structure and the open stair and landing areas that the glass would eventually follow. Seeing the space before the railing went in makes the project's actual scope clearer: this wasn't a small addition to an existing railing, it was glass built to follow a structure that previously had none in this form.

Installing the Glass Railings

Apex field measured the staircase, stair runs, landings, and overlooks, fabricated the glass sections, and installed the railing on site. The installation photographs show individual glass panels being set into place as part of the larger layout, each section measured and fabricated for its specific location, whether that location was an angled stair run or a level landing.

The Finished Staircase and Upper Overlooks

In the finished result, the railing continues through the home's main staircase, its additional stair runs, the landings between them, and the second-floor overlooks above, reading as one system rather than several disconnected pieces of glass. Glass railings have become some of the most recognizable work behind the Apex name, from individual staircases to projects that carry throughout an entire home.

Interior and Exterior Glass Railings Across Georgia

Apex designs and installs glass railings for staircases, balconies, and overlooks in both interior and exterior applications, for residential and commercial projects throughout Georgia. Across Georgia, this is what we do.

This same Buford property also included a high-end shower installation and a large exterior stair railing project, additional scopes

of work Apex completed at the property alongside this interior railing system. Those projects will be covered in a separate case study.

FAQ:

Can glass railings be installed on both stairs and upper-level overlooks? Yes. A single railing project can extend from a staircase through its landings to upper-level overlooks, with each section's glass measured and fabricated for its specific location.

How are glass railings measured for a staircase? Glass for a stair run is measured and fabricated to follow the rake of the stairs, while glass for a level landing or overlook follows a straight horizontal line, each requiring its own measurement rather than a single uniform approach.

Can one glass railing system continue across multiple levels? Yes. This Buford project shows a single connected railing system extending from the main staircase through additional stair runs, landings, and second-floor overlooks.

Are glass railings available for both interior and exterior stairs? Yes. Apex Glass Industries installs glass railings for both interior and exterior applications, including staircases, balconies, and overlooks.

When should the glass railing contractor become involved in a new construction or renovation project? Involving the glass contractor early, with access to architectural plans, drawings, or existing conditions, allows the railing layout to be reviewed as a whole before fabrication begins.

Does Apex Glass Industries install glass railings in Buford, Georgia? Yes. Apex Glass Industries completed a multi-level interior glass railing installation in Buford, Georgia, and installs residential and commercial glass railings throughout the state.
