A common assumption is that a wine cellar has to be planned at the blueprint stage, something reserved for new construction or a basement built with climate control in mind. The homeowners had lived in their house for years without a dedicated wine space, until a renovation opened up an underused room near the kitchen and raised the question of whether glass could turn it into something more.

Retrofitting a wine cellar into an existing home is a measurement and engineering problem, not a construction-from-scratch one. The enclosure's footprint was defined by an existing architectural opening that had never been designed to hold glass, so the solution was to fabricate the glass to fit the house, not alter the house to fit a standard product.

The wine cellar was built with half-inch tempered glass and pivot-hinge doors, a specification chosen for a specific structural reason: a pivot door carries its full weight on a single top and bottom point rather than along a hinge side, which allows a wider opening without the door itself needing to be wider, and a cleaner sightline with no visible hinge hardware.

This wasn't a standalone installation. It was one piece of a larger renovation that also included a separate glass gym entrance elsewhere in the home, and the two were coordinated deliberately: 12-inch matte black door pulls on the wine cellar, 18-inch matte black pulls on the larger gym entrance, same finish, proportioned differently for each door's scale. A renovation that touches multiple rooms is an opportunity to make those rooms read as one continuous decision rather than two unrelated installations.
